The Internet is the first thing that humanity has built that humanity doesn't understand, the largest experiment in anarchy that we have ever had.
Eric Schmidt, Google The Internet was born out of the theoretical ashes of an atomic destruction. Its fundamental design idea is to split data transfers into small pieces - so-called "packets" - and route those over a network of inter-connected computing nodes. Its routing was designed in such a "smart way" that it could handle a loss of some of its nodes by finding other routes through the net. This flexibility and visions of dedicated scientists and entrepreneurs build this "information and communication system" on which our modern world "runs".
It enables us to stay in contact with our loved ones over thousands of miles away, helps us finding the right cheese cake recipe and allows us practically to acquire every product or service we are looking for. But the Internet is more than a 24/7 shopping site with lots of free content. It has become a place in which viral messages travel around the world in minutes reaching millions of people and in which community sites claim to have more than 750 million users. The Internet therefore opens up a complete new "mega information and communication tool" which will be used to kick-off many changes that will shape our future...
