“Sinuosity” is a work inspired by a peacock that I watched opening its tail. Here I combined Chinese calligraphy (the large green seaweed-like strokes) with a yellow meander drawing of the open tail of a peacock behind the calligraphy. The meander drawing comes from other cultures such as Sona drawings from Angola, Kolam art from South India, Celtic knot-work, and Roman mosaic patterns. The Chinese calligraphy reflects my own culture, but the characters are distorted, transformed, while still recognizable, suggesting the transportation to another culture. The struggling but flowing currents in the background give the feeling that I am under water but not drowning. The peacock opening its tail is a sign of hope.
