More about Martinho Dias works in his website:http://www.martinhodias.eu
Martinho Dias was born in 1968 in Trofa (Portugal) where he lives and works. He has a degree in Fine Arts - Painting from the Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Oporto and he is currently attending the Master’s Degree in Painting at the same Faculty. He is represented in the NY Arts Annual Catalogue 2009 and in the magazine NY Arts – Top Websites 2012 in New York. In August 2012 his work was featured in the weekly heading of the curator Chenoa Solis of Saatchi Online, London. In September last, he represented Portugal in the 10th International Artistic Symposium, in Saarbrucken, Germany, and very recently the Trofa Town Council awarded him with the Cultural Merit Medal 2012.
He was a Visual Arts teacher and has illustrated many children’s and young people’s literature books. He has received various painting awards and his work has been displayed in many individual and collective exhibitions both in Portugal and abroad.
Some of his projects involved the participation of public figures from different areas, but mainly musicians. The complexity and the multiple features of the global world are my main principles. I select and manipulate pictures, mostly from the press and popular magazines and I try to create a new suggested reality, a new narrative, opened to the spectator. I use the realism of the figures and the gestural abstraction, the paradox, the contrariety, the criticism or the irony. I unfold reality, individual and collective, which is common to all of us, and I reconfigure it in the plan of the canvas.
