Amitabh SenGupta - Inscriptions
Painting
Notes on present paintings
The early man created imperfect speech mimicking sound of nature and scratched on the wall mimicking forms which he observed around. All these nonetheless stimulated inventions and man created symbols and pictograms to communicate. The process was indeed man’s expressions to suggest a concept, object, activity, place or event through pictures. Thus, with time the scripts and words took further shape into language. Man entered into a deeper and non-verbal zone as writing extended the existence of communication through space and time.
My attention drew on this point that man’s journey through script is a similar contemplation as with art. The thought of taking a similar journey to convey my art became more and more specific as my canvases grew. What was a collective thought in a societal process became metaphorical theme for me. I followed the structures of known scripts and entered into unknown forms, script-like. Thrown colours, drips of paint sought the surface of time where scripts stood conspicuously. When the script-like space reminded a page from the Illumination from the past, it is an intended structure. Yet, my canvas is not the story of the past, but an apparent feeling that may linger until one may ponder on my inscription, a painting of the timeless present.
