The term "layoff" originally meant a temporary interruption in work and usually pay. The term became a euphemism for permanent termination of employment. Many other euphemisms have been coined for permanent layoff". These are "downsizing", "excess reduction", "rightsizing", ""workforce reduction", "workforce optimization etc. Whatever it is called, the common man is hit hard where it hurts most--his stomach.
