"Live At The Bar Code" (dedicated to Joachim Kühn)
1.20 x 10.55 m Acrylic, ink, emulsion paint, collage, gouache, Tipp-Ex, fiber pens, paint marker, spray paint, pastels etc. 2010
The title is a play on words that arose when I realized that I was using bar codes as a reason for a painting while I constantly heard the music of pianist Joachim Kühn. I first got in contact with Joachim Kühn in the early 70-s, as in the courtyard of the University of Freiburg concerts were organized with improvised music - music that I never heard before. Later on - as a concert organizer – I had the the joy to present Joachim Kühn several times as a soloist or together with the St. Thomas Choir. He even was commisioned to compose a larger piece of music for my own festival.
Improvisation also plays a crucial role with my own artistic expression as a painter. I start from randomly found materials and motifs. There are no preliminary drawings, the painting process is completely improvised and spontaneously. Music is important. It runs constantly while painting, sets the mood and often decides on the direction that takes the action on the screen. In "Live At The Codebar" I have heard only the music by Joachim Kühn, whose compositions and improvisations have accompanied and inspired me for decades. So I dedicate the image "Live At The Codebar" Joachim Kühn. It would not be in the world without that man.
