“The Archer” was inspired by a Chinese mythology story about ten naughty suns in the sky that were neglected by their parents, the sun god Dijun and the sun goddess Shiho. Because the naughty suns were neglecting the earth, many problems resulted, such as droughts. Crops died because of the heat, and humanity suffered. Finally the sun god had enough mischief, gave his Grand Archer Yi ten magic arrows, and told him to discipline the naughty suns. The archer shot down the suns one by one until only one remained and the earth was again comfortable for humans to live in. I use meander curves to represent this story. The pattern on the lower left represents eternity in Chinese culture, but a man and a woman in Angolan culture. I use a meander curve to capture the nine naughty suns by encircling them. The entire meander drawing consisting of the archer, the bow and string, and the meander pattern encircling the nine suns consists of a single curve that the reader is invited to trace out. This painting is a visualization of the interaction or marriage between two vastly different cultures. The story belongs to the Eastern Chinese culture. The meander curve, with its geometrical constraints, represents other cultures manifested in any Western cosmopolitan city such as Montreal. The two cultures are shown firmly embedded in each other in a harmonious way, suggesting that no matter how strong the storms above ground may be, the tree will survive.
