In “Aquarius” I used stylized Chinese characters that symbolize the great Pacific Ocean that separates my homeland China from Canada, and that I crossed during my transplantation. To reflect the intercultural aspects of immigration to a foreign land I transformed the characters so that they look like meander sona drawings (from another culture) but nevertheless can still be recognized as Chinese characters. The scene of aquatic life under the sea represents a strange new environment, but the brightly colored life there promises a bright but perhaps uncertain future.
