This is one of a series of photographs from a Zuni sandstone formation in western New Mexico, dating to the Cretaceous (approx. 63-138 Ma).
Cernunnos was the horned god of the Celtic people, the male consort to the Earth Mother and the embodiment of the male principle in nature. The Greeks knew him as Pan, and - as the goat - he has been alternatively reviled in Christianity (as the Devil) and revered in Wiccan and pagan revivalism.
The elements in this image are eroded sandstone and lichens, manipulated and enhanced to reveal forms hidden within.
