The Anasazi (or "Ancestral Pueblo") people inhabited this harsh land from approximately 700 to 1130 CE. After this time, their departure is believed to have been because of severe drought and invasions.
The elements of this image derive from the erosion of the sandstone, variations in mineral composition, and different species of lichen (the blues and greens).
