Assembly of polished horn, sculpted clay, sculpted and polished bone.

I created this piece as a tribute to the abused woman, whom I perceive as a personification of our tortured planet. I have given her a name: Iqsituituq: the brave one. Iqsituituq became a walrus after her life as a caribou. Like the caribou the walrus is a source of food, clothing, shelter and warmth. This way of life, hunting, fishing and living off the land is slowly disappearing, a term I am loathe to use. As kablunangajuit (of Inuit and European origins) our family continue to hunt, trap and fish. My uncle, a hearty man of 82 has totally renovated my grandfather's log cabin in which he raised a family of 7 later to grow to 11 in a larger homestead. All of his sons follow the traditional way of life and their sons after them. There are no more dog teams in the village, just skidoos and all terrain vehicles. It is still a beautiful place.
