Pitiwat Somthai
Pitiwat Somthai was born in 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, and he studied his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Silpakorn University . He specialized in graphic art and has been working in printmaking sculpture and installation continuously.
As in the same time of working in Thailand, Pitiwat has spent a good deal of time abroad and participating actively in various residencies and competitions. He's worked in six different residencies in USA where he, for example, started the thinking process that led to the "Mai Pen Rai" exhibition, organized at Bangkok University Gallery. His artwork is often rooted in spiritual thinking but contrastingly executed with process similar to scientific experiment suggesting that his artistic career must be filled with hypothesis and unpredicted results.
In 2000, he spent 2 months residency at the Climemelice Castle in Prague, Czech Republic, and held the solo exhibition -Monumental Sculpture-"A Transition of the relationship between living, feeling and body as an ending of life: static movable". In addition to his own country and the residency places he's also had solo exhibitions in Hungary, and has taken part in group exhibitions in China, Netherlands, Italy, Britain, Spain and Canada.
Throughout his career Pitiwat Somthai has received many honours and awards. To mention some, he won the Grand Prize in Contemporary Art Exhibition organized by the Thai Farmers Bank in 1991 a year before he finished his Bachelor's degree. Three years later he was an award winner in the 8th Toshiba "Bring Good Things to Life " Art Competition, also in Bangkok. In 2001, he got Funded Residents for The Vermont Studio Center, Vermont, USA and 2003 Asian Cultural Counsel Fellowship in New York, USA. The latest was the Asem Duo Fellowship in 2008 .
Since 1995, he has been teaching in the printmaking department of Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts in Burapha University where he currently is holding an Assistant Professor position.
