Dov Lederberg - Congealings
Peinture
The paintings in this slide show are from my latest series: Congealings:

which are inspired by extreme close-ups of congealed wax textures caused by dousing a burning candle into the wine cup at the mystic Havdala or End of the Sabbath ceremony, signifying the "havdala", or separation, from the holy and the secular, from light and darkness. I originally thought to call these creations Angels, but as the canvas began to be populated with all kinds of gargoyles and even ghoulish denizens, many of whom I would be afraid to meet in a dark street, I decided that the relatively neutral term Congealings would be more appropriate.
The paintings contain innumerable
faces and faces within faces,
which could be seen as a visual paradigm
for the modern human personality,
a fitful assemblage of countless
family, schooling and social "faces",
many of which are even unknown to the bearer.
The paintings (40"x 30"- airbrushed acrylics on canvas) can be turned or hung
sideways and upside down to reveal amazing new faces as seen in gif files below.
